Los Lobos were one of America’s to the highest degree classifiable and original bands of the ’80s. They may have had a hit with “La Bamba” in 1987, in fourth dimension that cover just scratches the surface of their talents. Los Lobos ar eclectic in the best sense of the countersign. While they disembowel evenly from stone, Tex-Mex, nation, tribe, R&B, megrims, and traditional Spanish and Mexican medicine, their music never sounds forced or self-aware. Instead, all of their influences become unitary refined, mealy wakeless. From their identical issue 1 recordings, their rich musicality was patent; on well-nigh every subsequent book, they nativity found ways to redefine and spread out their legal, without ever straying from the musical traditions that form the spirit and soul of the stria.

Later on releasing an independent EP in the late ’70s and an EP in 1983, Los Lobos delivered their first major-label album, How Will the Wolf Survive?, in 1984; it received an enormous measure of critical acclaim, as good as a consecrate following of fans. In the next four-spot years, they released a marginally successful endeavour to make their wildly eclecticist sound palatable for a pop interview (By the Light of the Moon), a soundtrack of old Ritchie Valens songs that was a hit (La Bamba), and an album of traditional Mexican medicine (La Pistola y el Corazón). The band took deuce years off and returned with The Neighborhood in 1990; the album was a varied and powerful rock & undulate record that was wagerer than anything they had released in six geezerhood. Kiko, released in 1992, brought the stripe into more observational territory, without always abandoning their refined songwriting.

The band celebrated their 20-year anniversary with Only Another Band from East L.A., a modestly titled two-CD place that featured well-nigh of their biggest singles and recognized songs. It as well had rare tracks from their first record album, outtakes, and live tracks that fans had been wait for. They didn’t seem in concert on record over again until 1995, when they released the children’s record Papa’s Dream on Music for Little People Records. They as well scored the picture Desperate criminal and contributed tracks to several early soundtracks and tribute albums.

Their concluding press release for Warner Bros. came in the frame of 1996’s Prodigious Head, some other critically acclaimed album that still failed to excite the tag enough to keep them on the roster. Feeling dejected, they left one some other to reduce on side projects, like Soul Disguise, Houndog, and the Latin Playboys. The latter was the near dedicated design of the clump, finally becoming some other regular group for David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez, on top of their duties for Los Lobos, afterward previously releasing an record album in the early ’90s.

Los Lobos came stake in concert in 1999, when they recorded and released their number one record for Hollywood Records, This Time. Another Los Angeles-themed gem from the group, it didn’t perform up to the label’s liking and they only managed to rescue one more record for the company, the re-release of 1977’s Del Este de Los Angeles. Rhino/Warner Archives released the Cancionero: Mas y Mas box position the next year, simply despite the career retrospective, they were still together and came bet on on Mammoth Records for the Secure Morning Aztlan firing in 2002. Two long time later, artists such as Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Richard Thompson, and Mavis Staples united Los Lobos for The Ride.

In 2004, as Los Lobos famous 30 days in the music business, they recorded a pair of sold-out shows in San Francisco, which became the fundament for a live album and DVD, Live at the Fillmore, unco the oldtimer group’s first “live” set. Wolf Tracks: The Best of Los Lobos, the first-class honours degree successful attempt at a concise overview of the band’s cogent catalog arrived in 2006, on with the loosely conceptual new button The Town and the City, which ranks up there with the c. H. Best of the band’s three decades of material.

BBC: Hells Angels Tried to Kill Mick Jagger

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger was the target of an assassination plot that the Hells Angels motorcycle gang attempted to carry out in 1969, according to a new British Broadcasting Corp. documentary.

Jagger escaped with his life only because a small boat used by the manque assassins was swamped on the night of the planned strike, according to the report.

The Hells Angels planned to murder the super-slim, hip-shaking British rock icon after the gang had a dispute with the band about security measures at a December 1969 concert in northern California, according to the BBC documentary, which is based primarily on interviews with an FBI agent.

After an 18-year-old fan was stabbed to death in an encounter with Hells Angels members at the infamous free performance at Altamont, a early speedway, Jagger vowed not to associate with the Hells Angel ever again.

The concert was immortalized in a documentary shot at the locus called “Gimme Shelter.” Hells Angels penis Alan Passaro was arrested and tried for the stabbing death, caught on film, of Meredith Hunter, who got into a dispute with gang members near the stage as the Stones were playing. Passaro was acquitted in part because witnesses enounce Hunter pulled out a gun first base and dismissed at least one jibe. The Stones could see the fighting, but were not cognisant it resulted in a fatality. The band finished its determine and always said they feared a full-blown debauchery would come out if they cut the concert short.

The story from that night was e’er that the biker crew was hired by the Stones to act as security at the give up concert, an assertion long disputed by the Stones.

“The Hells Angels, at least, felt that they were hired. The legend was for $500 and free beer,” aforesaid Rolling Stone magazine tributary editor David Wild.

In retaliation for Jagger’s post-concert comments, the ring members crosshatched a design to kill the Stones frontman at his holiday home in Long Island, N.Y., according to the documentary, which airs tonight.

“If they were trying to kill him it sounds like it was such a bungled, stony mischance,” Wild said.

A group of men reportedly tried to reach the singer’s home by sea, but a storm hit their boat.

“Going by boat as they gathered the weaponry and their forces, a storm rolled up which nearly sunk the watercraft,” former FBI agent Mark Young said in the documentary.

The turbulent weather threw everyone overboard and the bunch made no other try on Jagger’s life. The documentary is unclear about whether Jagger was ever informed close to the plot on his life. The Associated Press contributed to this chronicle.

Rollie Pemberton, besides known as Cadence Weapon, stone-broke down musical barriers when his debut album, Break Kayfabe, hit record book of account shelves in 2005. Hailed as a rising hip-hop star in the independent view, he was lauded for avoiding the stale formulas that ar to a fault unremarkably lay down in mainstream pop simply too for straying from the to a fault often recluse nature that characterizes a lot of underground rappers. His mordacious rhymes set over his own synth-heavy, electro-fused beat generation possess prompted some to label him as the Canadian response to British dirty word MC Dizzee Rascal. His admiration for IDM acts of the Apostles like Aphex Twin is often more seeming in his material than some of his early influences, such as hip-hop veterans Prince Paul and Timbaland.

Pemberton’s musical roots, however, canful be traced back to his padre, Teddy Pemberton, a DJ wHO is credited for introducing rap to his hometown of Edmonton, the cap city of Alberta. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Teddy Pemberton created The Black Sound Experience wireless show on the University of Alberta’s CSJR station in 1980. Following in his father’s footsteps, Cadence Weapon observed that he rightfully precious to strike about the eld of 13, only his mother cherished him to pursue a calling in news media. He tended to journalism schoolhouse in Virginia for some fourth dimension, just the school did not suit him. Nonetheless, by the age of 18, he still established a name for himself as a tough music critic, composition for the Brooklyn-based Stylus webzine and the influential Pitchfork Media.

After he depart the early and was dismissed from the latter (the Pitchfork editor in chief declared via electronic mail that his reviews were too obscure), he began immersing himself into rhymes and producing his own tracks. In 2005, he pressed and released his first base drive, the integrate CD Cadence Weapon Is the Black Hand. His blog, which featured this turn, caught the attention of a few labels, including Def Jam, wHO treasured him to remix a track for their budding garage creative person, Lady Sovereign, and Upper Class Recordings, the Toronto-based mark that signed Cadence Weapon and released his number 1 full-length in December 2005. Breaking Kayfabe received rave reviews from the independent press — including from his early employers. It was as well nominated for the first Polaris Music Prize in 2006, which awards the topper Canadian album careless of genre or phonograph recording gross sales.

The bride wore dart launchers at Comic-Con wedding

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - The bride and groom grasped one another’s dart launcher-clad wrists and stared into each other’s starry eyes.

Fifty armour-clad guests, including several “Jedis” and a white caped “Elvis” in a rhinestone-studded ammo knock, stood reverently at tending. A couple of superheroes showed up late.

What better situation to hold a “Star Wars” themed wedding than a putting green patch of grass simply outside the famed Comic-Con convention where thousands of fans have congregated this week to revel in all manner of superhero and sci-fi lore?

Friday’s wedding ceremony, based on the linguistic process, costume and lore of a fictional Mandalorian race in the “Star Wars” movies, was the brain child of Tenille Kuhlman, 30, and Thomas Kuhlman, 39, avid fans wHO decided that the convention was a perfect place to get together far-flung members of their close-knit “Star Wars” fan club to celebrate their special clarence Day.

The couple met on-line two days ago, aforementioned Tenille Kuhlman, who aforementioned she was at first was hesitant to embrace the Mandalorian lifestyle. “When I met him I knew what every Joe Blow knows about ‘Star Wars.’ It just form of turned into life for us.”

Last wintertime they matrimonial in a civil ceremony and settled in Yuma, Arizona, still Thomas Kuhlman longed to receive a Mandalorian blessing of their union. “I said, ‘Hey, that’s never going to happen,’” Tenille Kuhlman said.

But according to clan church doctrine, Mandalorians don’t make threats, they make promises. The wedding cursorily began to take soma. Yet 10 minutes ahead the ceremonial occasion was to begin, disdain her thrifty planning, Tenille found herself still wearing her “I Love Nerds” T-shirt, aflutter and without makeup.

Friends stepped in to help. “Hey, come on guys I’ve got jobs for you to do!” unitary Mandalorian shouted. “Bounty hunters are all about jobs!” an eagre warrior replied.

On the Doll - movie review

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I have no idea what “on the doll” means, but I guess it has something to do with
prostitution and pornography. Thomas Mignone’s harrowing film is an expose of sorts
into the sex trade underworld, offering interlocking tales that involve a call girl
(Brittany Snow) who’s looking to rob her richest client, two teens (Candice Accola and
Chole Domont) who’re lured into Internet porn by their seedy teacher, and a porn
ad editor (Josh Janowicz) who is trying to pay off a mobster to get an old friend
out from behind the glass at a peep show booth. But it isn’t just sex that ties them
all together, there is loads of violence surrounding their lives every day.

Most of On the Doll’s stories are writ small, but each is intense (save for one, which
concerns another fetish-oriented call girl who’s trying to get out of the business…
and failing). Mignone does a remarkable job at taking what starts as a mild flirtation
or tiptoeing into perversity and showing how baby steps can soon lead to full-on,
downhill slides. The movie is surprisingly at its best in the story of the two teens,
who first flirt with their perverted teacher (played memorably by Ocean’s 11 series
character actor Eddie Jemison), then end up taking a ride with him to the local
web porn production studio, where they’re crudely sized up for their value to the
viewing audience. It’s a shocking transition: Just minutes earlier these girls were
worrying about their grades.

On the Doll’s finally tries to wrap everything up tidily, which is perhaps the wrong
approach for a movie about an industry with no happy endings. Memorable more for
its performances than its plot, this somewhat scrappy independent doesn’t fade from
the mind quickly.

The DVD includes a commentary from Mignone, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and deleted
scenes (which are unfortunately marred by commentary that overlaps them at exactly
the same volume as the standard audio).

Amy Poehler’s ‘Baby Mama’ Drama

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Amy Poehler has starred on “Saturday Night Live” for seven old age, beloved for her risk-taking quirky characters, and more recently, for her buzz-worthy Hillary Clinton impression.

But she feels most at home base away from the television cameras in a indistinctly lit theater in Manhattan, where tickets only toll $5.

For the last 12 years Poehler, 36, has performed with the Upright Citizens Brigade, an improv comedy group started in Chicago that Poehler brought to New York with other comedians in order to fetch their names out.

While she doesn’t demand help with name recognition anymore, and she sure doesn’t need the money, she continues to perform with the improv troupe.

“It’s the nighest thing I have to church. You show up to have this communal experience with people that I truly love to feel,” Poehler said.

“I consider it reminds you you’re supposed to be silly. I think sometimes with a certain amount of success you get a little unconnected from what brought you there. And you contract nervous to take chances and so what I do like about this show is it reminds me o’er and all over again to take risks and be dangerous.”

At 5 foot 2 inches, she is a fearlessly physical comic wHO once blacked out on live TV after a particularly rough pratfall.

On “SNL” she has chosen memorable characters such as Caitlin, a flashy, one-legged realism show contestant; Amber, the host of “Good Morning Meth”; Michael Jackson; and Sharon Stone.

Her Biggest Fans

Poehler grew up in Burlington, Mass., the daughter of two teachers whose unmitigated support of their daughter’s career borders on hysteria.

“They watch literally almost every ‘SNL’ for the past seven years, live. I’m not kidding. They watch it live. They experience everything I’ve ever done on tape. Every film poster I’ve ever done. I suffer [a] restraining order against them. It’s now getting inappropriate,” Poehler joked.

They consume reason to be lofty. Poehler has broken some glass ceilings in the comedy world. Three years ago she and Tina Fey became the first female co-anchors for the iconic “SNL” sketch “Weekend Update.”

Poehler enjoys doing the “Weekend Update,” because it is one of the few roles that lets her be herself.

Metallica discuss new ‘Death’ album

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Metallica have revealed the meaning of their album title Death Magnetic.

The record, which will be released on September 22, is the LA metal veterans’ ninth studio release.

Speaking about the album, singer James Hetfield told NME: “It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business.

“Like [Alice In Chains frontman] Layne Staley and a lot of the people that have died, basically - rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there.”

Hetfield explained that the band were keen to confront the “big white elephant” subject of death with the new album.

“The concept that we’re all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about - no one wants to bring it up,” he said.

“It’s the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point.”
