Misty May Has Surgery For Dance Injury

Olympic volleyball star Misty May-treanor is recovering after an ankle injury forced her to pull out of U.S TV talent show Dancing With The Stars.

The two-time Olympic gold medal winner damaged her Achilles tendon during rehearsals for the hit programme on Friday.

She was forced to cancel her run on the show, and is resting up at home after surgery on Tuesday to repair the injury.

Her spokesperson tells Usmagazine.com, “Thanks for all your concern and well wishes for Misty. I wanted to let you all know Misty had a successful surgery on her ruptured Achilles this morning. She is currently at home recovering. Her husband, Matt, is with her.”

May-Treanor appeared on crutches and with her leg in a cast at the end of the show on Monday, telling viewers: “I heard a pop. I was doing the Lindy Hop. I thought I flew out of control and hit the judges’ stairs, or it felt like I got hit in the back with a baseball bat. Then, I just couldn’t put weight on it.”

Her dance partner on the show, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, added: “This whole thing is really sad.”

British police charge three men for fire attack on UK publisher

Friday, November 14th, 2008

LONDON - With British publication in doubt for Sherry Jones’ “The Jewel of Medina,” the U.S. publisher of her controversial novel about the Prophet Muhammad has moved up the release date from Oct. 15 to Monday.

“By speeding up the publication, we wanted to reduce or eliminate the chance of violence,” Eric Kampmann, president of Beaufort Books, said Thursday, noting that three men were arrested in London last weekend for a fire-bomb attack on the offices of publisher Gibson Square.

“What had occurred in London, we didn’t want to have occur here. We wanted people to have a chance to read the book. Once they read the book, we thought the violence part of this story would disappear and people would be focusing on the story, and the book and Sherry.”

Kampmann said he knew of no threats in the United States. Jones said she was not concerned about her safety.

“I have spoken to a member of the FBI and have been assured I have not been targeted, so I will continue to go about my life as usual,” she said. “I’m excited that the book is coming out Monday because once people read it, any possible threat will be eliminated.”

After the arrests in London, plans for the British release have stalled, although Gibson Square initially said it would release the novel this month. “Jewel of Medina” is still scheduled to come out in more than a dozen countries, including Serbia, Italy and Hungary.

British police charged three men Thursday in connection with the fire-bomb attack on the London office of the book’s publisher.

Police said 40-year-old Ali Behesti, 22-year-old Abrar Mirza, and 30-year-old Abbas Taj were charged with plotting to endanger life and damage property. Beheshti was also charged with possessing a weapon “designed or adapted for the discharge of a noxious liquid or gas.”

Jones’ debut novel was supposed to be released in the United States in August, but publisher Random House Inc., changed its mind, saying in a statement that “credible and unrelated sources” had warned that the book “could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment.” Beaufort, which took on O.J. Simpson’s once-rejected “If I Did It,” signed up the author and is releasing “Jewel of Medina” with an announced first printing of 50,000.

The novel is about Aisha, who according to tradition was nine when she became the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, and later a political and military leader in her own right. Jones has already completed a sequel about Aisha’s adult life that Beaufort plans to publish next year.

Jones so far has appearances scheduled in Spokane, Wash., where she lives, and at the Montana Festival of the Book, in Missoula. Barnes & Noble, Inc. does not plan to have Jones read at any of its stores, but will stock the novel.

“It will be shelved in our hardcover new release fiction section,” said spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating. “We’ve been in touch with the publisher who assures us that neither he nor the author feels there are any immediate safety or security concerns around this title.”

Amy undergoes tests

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Singer Amy Winehouse was hospitalized Saturday for tests on her chest and lungs, her London spokesman confirmed to People.

The 25-year-old singer, who was hospitalized in June with a severe lung ailment, had a doctor visit her at home Thursday, People.com reports.

Then, over the weekend, “they wanted to do some tests as a precaution,” her spokesman Chris Goodman said. “Obviously she had lung and chest problems which she had treatment for not so long ago, so they’re just making sure.” She was expected to return home yesterday.

Winehouse’s father, Mitch, has previously said that the singer’s lungs are “all gunked up” from smoking.

Kerry Katona Warned She Could Lose Her Nipples If She Keeps Smoking

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

A newly slimline Kerry Katona could face having disfigured breasts for life if she continues smoking cigarettes, according to her surgeon.

The reality TV star – who made headlines for slurring her way through an interview on This Morning – most recently went under the knife in her MTV documentary Whole Again.

Kerry decided to have surgery to reshape her entire figure with a breast reduction from a 34GG to a 34DD and a tummy tuck.

Dr Hamilton, who performed the star’s surgery, tells The Sun, “The risk of wound or healing problems with the skin or nipple is a risk for everyone.

“In smokers it can be worse because less oxygen reaches the tissue.

“I’ve never seen a nipple turn black and drop off, but it has happened. It’s a good scare tactic. I told Kerry.”

Tina Fey: Anyone can imitate Sarah Palin’s voice

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

NEW YORK —

Anyone can do Sarah Palin’s voice, says comedian Tina Fey, who has done a pretty good job of it herself. “Not since ‘Sling Blade’ has there been a voice that anybody can do,” Fey said. “Anybody can take a swing at this voice.”

Appearing on CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” scheduled to air Friday, Fey shared her formula for having spoofed the Alaska governor in recent “Saturday Night Live” sketches.

“It’s a little bit `Fargo,’ it’s a little bit Reese Witherspoon in `Election,’” said Fey, adding she also borrowed the Midwestern accent of her friend Paula’s grandma, “a sweet, sweet old lady from Joliet, Ill. She would always say, `Ohhhh, this and that and stuff like that!’”

Fey, the star of the NBC comedy “30 Rock,” was formerly a writer and cast member at “SNL,” where she has made a splash with guest appearances this fall making sport of her resemblance to the Republican vice presidential hopeful.

She explained to Letterman other ways she captures Palin’s distinctive speaking style: dropping g’s and loading sentences with r’s.”

“She’s digging those r’s,” Fey said. “I think she thinks there’s oil in those r’s - she is digging deep!”

As spoof made way for reality, Gov. Palin was scheduled to appear on “SNL” Saturday. There was no word on whether Fey would be on hand.

Transformers: The Ride

Movie blockbuster Transformers is heading to Universal Studios’ theme park - it’s to be the basis of a thrilling new ride.

The Michael Bay-directed film grossed more than $700 million (GBP404 million) worldwide upon its release in 2007, and studio bosses at Universal are looking to further cash in on its success by launching a Transformers-themed rollercoaster.

The high-definition 3D ride is being developed by Universal Parks + Resorts, original toy makers Hasbro Inc. and Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks studio, which produced the move.

And theme park bosses hope the white-knuckle ride will “transform perceptions of theme park experiences”.

It is expected to launch in 2011 at Universal Studios Singapore, which is due for completion in 2010, while a Hollywood version will follow the Asian opening.

Spielberg was also involved with Universal in the making of Jurassic Park - The Ride.

A sequel to last year’s box office smash is currently being made, with stars Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox reuniting with Bay for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which is set for a summer 2009 release.

Craig: ‘Picking Bond Girls Is Weird’

Movie star Daniel Craig finds the auditions for Bond girls “weird” because they involve him trying to connect with a string of beautiful ladies.

The producers of the Bond films have always insisted their stars play a major part in picking the suave superspy’s leading ladies - but Craig admits he feels uncomfortable choosing a film partner in a room of hopefuls.

He says, “They build a set, and you get the cameras in; then you’re introduced to 10 girls. You have to act out a scene with them.

“It’s kind of weird and awkward and strange, but you know if something’s working almost immediately.”

So far, Craig has helped select Eva Green for Casino Royale and Olga Kurylenko for new 007 adventure Quantum of Solace.

Women Lawyers Go To Battle In Madonna/Ritchie Divorce

Guy Ritchie will have to deal with another powerful woman once his divorce battle with Madonna hits the courtroom - he has reportedly hired one of Britain’s top female lawyers.

The filmmaker has hired revered divorce lawyer Helen Ward to pit against his estranged pop superstar wife and her attorney - rumoured to be Fiona Shackleton, the lawyer famed for represented Paul McCartney in his divorce from Heather Mills earlier this year.

According to London’s Evening Standard newspaper, Ritchie is taking advice from Ward after hearing of her credentials in the divorce law arena - she settled the U.K.’s biggest ever divorce payout. Ward also lists Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber as a client.

Ritchie has allegedly approached Ward as she is reported to be “particularly adept at protecting the interests of fathers”, an aspect the director is keen to focus on after allegedly making it clear he doesn’t want a share of Madonna’s $525 million (GBP284 million) fortune in their settlement.

The pair announced their split on Wednesday after months of speculation surrounding the state of their seven-and-a-half year marriage.

Kurylenko Landed Bond Role Without Rehearsals

Bond girl Olga Kurylenko was surprised to land a role in Quantum Of Solace - because she never rehearsed for the part.

Kurylenko plays femme fatale Camille in the latest installment of the superspy franchise.

But she thought her dreams of playing the famous role ended at her auditions.

She explains, “I didn’t get the scenes to learn beforehand. They didn’t arrive so I was totally unprepared.

“So I sat there for 20 minutes trying to memorise them, but the audition ended up more like an improvisation. I thought, `Well I’ve got nothing to lose; I probably won’t get it, so I’m just going to have fun.”’

Angelina Jolie Buys Son Maddox His First Knife

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Angelina Jolie has bought her six-year-old adopted son Maddox his first knife.

The Tomb Raider star says she purchased a blade for her son because she wants to educate him about the dangers and benefits of having a weapon around.

She tells W magazine, “We take him to a special shop. We also talk about Samurais and the idea about defending someone as good. We talk about everything.”

The mum-of-six reveals she took the decision to arm the youngster because she went knife shopping with her own mother at the age of 11.

Shots of Angelina breastfeeding taken by her partner Brad Pitt also accompany the new interview.
